about

Telekin was an LA-based electronic/techno band (1980-1985) which recorded one single, "Imagination" and "Waiting for the Moment" - released in Belgium, Holland and Germany by Idiot Records produced by Craig Leon. Idiot also created an extended dance mix of "Imagination" for a 12" release. The band consisted of core members Ted (Teddy) Quinn (lyrics/lead vocals); Catherine Shinn (formerly Cathie Kimble) (composer/keyboards/vocals); Don Kaiser (keyboards); Elizabeth Taubman Taylor (keyboards/vocals); Debra Quinn (Ted's sister) (bass keyboards/vocals); Denise Fraser (drums for a majority of the band's time together). Other members in earlier incarnations included Ray Numui Jarvis (bass); the late Fred Drake (drums; Earthlings? Castle Bravo; founder of Rancho de la Luna Studio in Joshua Tree); Shawn Guerin (drums; Deadbeats; Bent); Steve Fishman (bass) and Gary Gruver (saxophone) (also Deadbeats; Bent). For a time the band was managed by the legendary Herb Cohen (Frank Zappa; Tom Waits). Telekin was a favorite of LA photographer Moshe Brakha and appeared regularly at the Lhasa Club in the early 80s. This album is a compilation culled from 100's of hours of recordings, salvaged, digitized and mastered by Don Kaiser in the early 21st century. "Imagination" is still popular among fans of 80s dance music. " The band was a tight-knit, warm, "family" ensemble, with Cathie's and Elizabeth's small children often seen dancing on the stage. There was nothing cold or calculated" about Telekin - in the words of one reviewer in Music Connection magazine, which performed in support of causes ranging from the National Organization for Women's efforts on behalf of the Equal Rights Amendment to the St. Elmo's Art Village in LA. For a moment, the LA Weekly had Telekin as the "pick to click" in 1983.
