about

In late 1989 I worked for Johnny Vargas at a club in Hollywood as doorman, after returning home from an explosive romance in New York. One night I fell in love with a French woman named Sandrine who was fighting in the alley outside the bar with another French woman by the same name. She told me that her name translated to "ashtray." Sandrine stayed with me for a while but left early one morning to go find a pair of black leather pants on Hollywood Boulevard, like the ones Jim Morrison wore, leaving a note which read, "I've gone to toss molotov cocktails at the military parade." The person doing sound at the Gaslight at the time - other than Derf Scratch from the band Fear -was a guitar player named Joe "City" Garcia, from New Mexico. Tequila Mockinbird heard us filling one night when a band was a no-show, singing Dylan songs on stage. When the Gulf War began, she started something called the Scud Club and told us we were on the bill for the debut. It was Martin Luther King Day so we called ourselves Dream Army. A few years later, when we recorded this song with Fred, and returned home to LA, Fred added vocals by Mark Olsen, Victoria Williams and himself, and asked a piano player visiting from Germany to add a track. When I returned to the Rancho I was blwon away by all the love Fred had put into this song.
