about

fred was enjoying some couvoissier between takes. his drumming and harmonies really give this song extra meaning for me. i wrote it while my friend dave was in the state hospital for going after a cop outside the bank with a pencil. he had correctly predicted the airplanes and the war and the last time i saw him he said he was going to marry sophia, who he said was the mother of god. i played this song for him that night as he laid on the floor of my house. then he wanted to hear some john lennon. he never said anything bad about anybody. i was worrying that bush was going to beat al gore and all he said was that bush didn't seem qualified for the job. the line after 'I prayed to jesus' was going to be 'i played the beatles, they turned me on' but i changed it to 'fool,' thinking of the times robert, fred and i recorded all night as ministry of fools, at dean's studio, always broke but with all that freedom to experiment in the studio, just like our hero's.

lyrics

there's a fire burning and my belly's full she's
asleep upstairs
and the dogs are sleeping well
but i still have a yearning tearing up my soul rain of
love rain of love
i crossed the ocean from whence she'd come i came here
searching for where i'm from
now i'm very thirsty could you get me some rain of
love rain of love
i hear the thunder rolling past my door sometimes i
wonder what i'm waiting for
when the wounded soldier says it's time for war rain
of love rain of love
i prayed to jesus when i was young i played the fool
it turned me on
now i know there's some reason why i sing this song
rain of love rain of love
rain of love rain of love rain of love rain of love
