about

I woke up from a dream early on the morning of what would have been Fred Drake's 45th birthday, the first one after his death, with this song completely written. In the dream, I was trying to play the old Lennon-McCartney song "World Without Love" for Fred on guitar, but I couldn't get past the first few lines. The song became this one, and when I woke up the sun was rising outside my wondow, and pouring through some orange curtains that were tacked up there. It didn't seem like a song I could have written. It felt more like Fred brought it to me for his birthday, from the Other World. I quickly drove into the Monument, as we called it (Joshua Tree National Park) and played the song for Elia's video recorder at the adobe ruins of Ryan's campground, with our dog, Negra, and an orange, so I wouldn't forget it.
