about

To mark the 25th anniversary of Fred Drake discovering the house in Joshua Tree which would become his legendary home studio, setting off a wave of artists and musicians flooding this desert town. Fred and Ted were on one of many weekend 'trips' to Joshua Tree when they bumped into a friend from LA, Tony Mason, with his partner Debbie Hotchkiss, on top of Keys View, in what was then Joshua Tree National Monument. The four of them took a surreal drive into town, which consisted of not much more than Alta's Curiosities, Country Kitchen and Jeremy's Cyber Cafe. After getting some rest at the Harmony Motel, Fred and Ted left to go back to Hollywood when Fred noticed a sign which read, "Three Houses for Rent." Turning up the road past the post office, they met the owners of the houses, and Fred decided on the spot, to make the largest of the three his home and studio. Fred lived in that house for the rest of his life and recorded many artists there, assisted by Tony Mason. Fred made his own record, Twice Shy, along with many ambient recordings, some of which were posthumously released as the Sky Party, and his work with the Earthlings? Fred and Ted's collaborations, which had first begun in the band Telekin in 1981, carried on in Ministry of Fools in the late 80s/early 90s, continued even after Fred passed away on June 20, 2002, over the following 18 months when Ted - with the help of Tony, Billy, Dana
- finished recordings they had begun together. This collection of songs is drawn from the 5 albums they worked on together in that house, "Canvas," Dig Your Own Cactus, "Postcards from Joshua tree," and "Design", "Help Wanted," and "Dog Years."
